Remarks: AT MID-POINT OF RWY WE CAME UPON A HERD OF DEER CROSSING RWY IN SINGLE FILE & EXTENDED TO THE L & R AS FAR AS I COULD SEE. I BRAKED MOD. HARD & THERE WAS AN IMPACT THAT ACTIVATED THE ELT & SPUN THE A/C AROUND TO L. I REGAINED CONTROL & CONTD ROLLOUT. I WARNED OTHER A/C IN AREA & REMOVED DEER FROM RWY. A/C SUSTAINED SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE TO L WING & L MAIN GEAR DOOR. I LATER LEARNED TAHT THE UNIV THAT OPERATED THE ARPT HAS PARTIALLY INSTALLED A FENCE WHICH FUNNELS DEER SO THAT THEY CROSS AT THE MID-POINT OF THE RWY. PILOT LISTED SEVERAL STEPS TO REDUCE RISK OF A DEER STRIKE. 4 DEER HAD BEEN STRUCK IN PAST 2 YEARS.
