American Conservatory Theater

Founded in 1965, the American Conservatory Theater (ACT) began its inaugural San Francisco season at the Geary Theater in 1967. A dozen years later, it was honored with a Tony Award for outstanding theater performance and training. Today, the ACT enjoys a national and international reputation for its live theater productions, intensive actor training, and community involvement.

To date, more than 300 performances has been held at the American Conservatory Theater, reaching a total audience numbering seven million people. Productions include classical works as well as explorations of contemporary playwriting. It is also an educational institution, serving some 3,000 students every year. It set up the country's first Master of Fine Arts actor training program that was not affiliated with a college or university. Past students include Danny Glover, Annette Bening, Denzel Washington, and Benjamin Bratt, to name a few.

Hosting the largest theater company in the San Francisco Bay Area, the American Conservatory Theater employs over 800 people each season. They include teachers, performers, artists, technicians, and administrative staff. Performances are held in ACT's Beaux Artsstyle theater located in the heart of the Union Square theater district.
