Camron-Stanford House

The Camron-Stanford House is near and dear to many in the Oakland, California area and they have worked hard to restore the treasure for others to enjoy. This Victorian home is located on the shore of Lake Merritt and has been home to many of the city's most affluent families since it was built in the 1800's and later became the Oakland Public Museum. This was the first teaching museum located west of the Mississippi River. In 1965, the items that were on exhibit were transferred to the new Oakland Public Museum which was located a couple of blocks from the Camron-Stanford House. It was several years before the house opened again as a museum welcoming people of all ages with an interest in Oakland and Victorian history. Docent-led tours happen the third Wednesday of each month between 1 and 5 pm. The cost is $5.00 for adults, with discounts for seniors and children. The first Sunday of each month welcomes visitors with free admission. Group tours, school group tours, and tours with afternoon tea are all available and can be arranged through the museum. The shop at the museum offers visitors a variety of books and Victorian-style items that allow them to take home a piece of the Camron-Stanford House.
