Castle Crags State Park

Six miles south of Dunsmuir off Interstate 5, the Castle Crags State Park is named after a group of stark glacier-polished crags that rise to heights of 6,000 feet. The geological formations are made of 170-million-year-old granite, eroded by wind, rain, sun, and gravity. To the north is Mt. Shasta, a dormant volcano that dominates the landscape at a height of 14,162 feet. Another scenic aspect of the park is the metamorphic Grey Rocks crest of Flume Creek Ridge, which appears green in color.

Visitors here can enjoy hiking 28 miles of developed trails, one of which is the 2.7 mile route to Castle Crags Wilderness in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. A portion of the Pacific Crest Trail also runs through the park, as does a two-mile segment of the upper Sacramento River, available for swimming and fishing.

Campers will appreciate having access to some 80 campsites within Castle Crags State Park, including family-friendly campgrounds as well as hike/bike campsites and six primitive camping areas. Other amenities here include a visitor center, restrooms, picnic tables, showers, and horseback trails,

Castle Crags State Park is located at 20022 Castle Creek Road, Castella, California 96017-0080. Reservations for the campgrounds are recommended. The maximum length for campers is 27 feet, or 21 feet for vehicle-attached trailers.
