Desert Studies Center

The Desert Studies Center, associated with the California State University, is located in the Mojave Desert just outside of Zzyzx, CA. The center's goal is to provide a base for students to conduct research and learn about the Mojave Desert.

The center is positioned off Soda Dry Lake at the western end of the Mojave National Preserve, making it a convenient departure area for trips to Death Valley National Park, the Cima Dome and Volcanic area; a prehistoric area and many other interesting areas within the Mojave Desert.

The Desert Studies Center was once the site of Zzyzx Mineral Springs and Health Spa that was operated without federal permission. Once the owner was ejected, CSU was able to procure the buildings and establish the center.

Most of the residents of the center are enrolled in college or university courses involving some aspect of desert study areas or are involved in desert-related research. However, organized community and school groups with desert-oriented activities are also welcome and can be accommodated.

Reservations for day-use or overnight stays are required by contacting the California Desert Studies Consortium. The center is 175 miles northeast of Los Angeles, located between Barstow, CA and Las Vegas, NV.
