The museum is located at 10301 Highway 49. They are open Wednesday through Sunday from 10am to 4pm. They do not ask for admission, but it is possible to donate to help the museum stay open.

Many of the artifacts in the museum are from the 1800s, especially the 1840s. The gold rush era was the most important to California. Local residents in the area are still 3rd and 4th generation descendants of miners, shopkeepers, and ranchers. Some have donated their family heirlooms for exhibit, along with photographs. The permanent exhibits include a large model of Coulterville Hotel and a Wells Fargo Building. They existed before 1899 when a fire destroyed much of the buildings of the city. Mining tools and equipment are also on display permanently. Each year they bring in temporary exhibits such as a gun collection from the 1800s and 1900s. There was also a Chinese garment collection that came to the museum for a time.
