Stevens Trail

Stevens Trail is a popular spot for year round hiking in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. The trail is located just outside of Sacramento, California offering 4.5 miles of trail. The trail runs up the northwestern slope near the North Fork of the American River Canyon. The trailhead is located at Colfax and ends at the meeting of Secret Ravine and North Fork. The trail also connects with Iowa Hill and Placer California.

There is a gentle slope throughout the trail making it easy for most hikers, especially those who are not avid hikers. From the parking area to the headwaters of Slaughter Ravine the trail runs north with a down slope in elevation. The trail then turns east towards Central Pacific Railroad and Cape Horn before it crosses Robbers Ravine. Several views of the landscape and Gold Rush mines are possible. Though there are mines along the trail the State Park Rangers ask that everyone stay out of the mines as they are dangerous. Chinese laborers were responsible for many of these mines and shafts, but their early history makes them quite dangerous today with shifting ground and old timbers holding open the entrances. April and May mark the best time to go along the trail.
