Women's Building Mural

The Women's Building Mural is actually the MaestraPeace Mural, a painting on the exterior of the Women's Building community organization in San Francisco, California. The mural blends the spirit of multi-generational and multi-cultural support offered by the organization that operates within the building. The mural was painted in 1994 by seven women artists including Edythe Boone, Juana Alicia, Susan Kelk Cervantes, Miranda Bergman, Yvonne Littleton, Meera Desai and Irene Perez. The murals spans two exterior wall and highlights historic figures and serves as an inspiration to women in the area. The work took two and a half years to plan and implement. Themes of the artwork include the healing power of women's wisdom throughout history, the making of history by women around the world and the contributions of women throughout history. Visitors to the building can get a key to the mural that enables them to recognize the famous women featured in the mural and learn more about the making of the mural. Postcards, notecards, t-shirts and other memorabilia featuring likenesses of the mural are for sale in the Women's Building. The Women's Building has been in operation since 1971 in San Francisco, offering a variety of social programs and support to women and families in the area.
