How accurate is City Data’s cost of living index? I live in a metropolitan area with a population of at lest a million and the cost of living index here is 88.3. The cost of living in Gadsden, Alabama (population of over 33,000) is 80.3, but the cost of living for Centreville, Alabama is 86.7 with a population of less than 3000. What is it about Centreville that makes it more expensive than Gadsden?

Gadsden has no well paying large industries located there, Houses are fairly cheap relatively speaking just due to so many people leaving especially after Goodyear left.

Someone uploaded a video of a remote town in Vermont with 3000 people,no highway ,just dirt road.
Reminds me of some Siberia towns, where there are no retail shops and trucks loaded with grocery will drop by and you just buy from them-bread,milk,cheese,canned goods.

If you knew anything about Gadsden, you would understand why it's index is so low.

Lacks the retail amenities compared to the nearby Anniston-Oxford area.

Due to continuing poor city leadership over last 40 years, Gadsden remains stuck in the past, several decades behind modern America cities. With all the jobs gone, it's basically an economically depressed area. It's not likely to improve; in fact, it's more likely to continue its slow death spiral than ever recover. The strength and hope for any economy whether personal, community, city, state or country is based on its ability to consume.... in other words, to drive / influence Demand. Since there's no Demand coming out of the area, Supply remains minimal. And, at the intersection of Land, Labor and Capital is Prosperity. Although Gadsden has available Land, there's no Labor or Capital willing to be invested upon it. Therefore, Gadsden's decline continues.
