Just wondering what happened to all the residents of the above residences.Where did they go?.I assume they get dispersed to other areas?.i wonder what the residents of said areas think of their new neighbours?.Coming back to the Chicago area (Skokie) on holiday for the third time in a couple of days and take a keen interest in the comings and goings of all the states I have visited over the years(35 so far)so I am genuinely interested in the dispersal of the bad estates residents as I myself have the misfortune to have received one of the dispersed residents from a bad area of Edinburgh into our block of six.Drug dealing father and son chased out of previous residences by other fine gentlemen over debts incurred.Daily visits during the nights to buy, drug squad breaking down the door twice, people stoned out of their mind on the stairs and when you go to the authorities(not sure what to equate them with in the states maybe section 8?)they say"well they have to stay somewhere".Thanks a bundle.Thinking about moving after 20 years,But I think do not let the B*******S win.Happy days indeed.Looking forward to Chicago for two weeks break from these bozos.

Most of the Cabrini Green and Robert Taylor residents moved to various neighborhoods across the south and west sides.

How did the residents of those various neighborhoods across the south and west sides feel about this enrichment of their communities?

It's best not to take the bait of those whose intent is dubious. I also question when ones location in the world is removed after years of listing it?

Look at some vintage pictures of Cabrini Green when they were first developed! They actually looked safe!

The story of Cabrini-Green begins in in 1941, with the construction of the Frances Cabrini Homes, also known as the Cabrini Row-house as two-story beige brick buildings as one drives down Chicago Avenue toward the Chicago River.

Cabrini-Green was initially meant to revitalize its generally run-down surroundings. Before its construction, it had been the site of poorly built informal housing, populated primarily by Italian immigrants.

Built for war workers, the new Row-houses were the first integrated public housing project in the city. The people who moved into the 586 apartments were NOT the poorest of the poor. Before the CHA began its construction this part of town was known as Little Hella predominantly Sicilian neighborhood with shoddy housing stock and rampant crime.

The post-war construction and population boom brought a dire need for affordable housing and CHA soon expanded its footprint in the old slums west of the Gold Coast by building mid- and high-rise projects. In 1955, when construction on the Cabrini Extension - the 15 red-brick buildings between Chicago and Division began, the Row-houses were no longer as diverse as they once were and the new buildings were filled mostly with working black families. This trend continued as the last part of the development - the 8 white buildings of the William Green Homes, north of Division were completed in 1962.

So it was still a high-crime area before the first Row-homes were built even in the early 40s then primarily Italian Sicilian Immigrants, but by the mid-50s already changed to mostly working African-Americans thru its most Notorious era once the high-rises came in the early 60s.

DavePa, Thank you for the postings. Then if there was still crime in the area in the 1940's, with the Sicilian people that lived there, I can not imagine anything comparable to the era in the 1970's and on. Also, the buildings (although obviously new at the time of construction) and the surrounding area still looked a lot CLEANER!

Interesting history. What did this Frances Cabrini do wrong to have a public housing project named after her?

Why did the 'notorious era' come with the high rises in the early 60s?

How did the (forced) relocation of Cabrini Green residents to other neighborhoods affect those neighborhoods after the high rises got demolished?

Yeah..until people started getting thrown from the upper level walkways. That's why the fences were put up.
