I'm in the early stages of planning a family vacation and we've never been to North Carolina. I have a picture in my mind that may not exist at all, but I thought I'd ask here in the hopes of maybe there's a town that fits the bill.
I'd like to find a cute town with nice beaches and good swimming, with some bike paths (preferably paved, we're more casual and have young kids) that go along the coast or through some good natural scenery. I'm thinking of something similar to what Mackinac Island in Michigan offers, if you're familiar with it. Throw in some good eating and some family-friendly stuff to do.
I recommend Oak Island as a family-friendly beach. While it does not have specific bike trails, the streets are safe enough to ride for several miles. There is also a nature center, a short hiking trail and a "heron lookout" park. The surf is gentle enough for small kids. You can drive to some very good restaurants in the town of Southport and scenery at a Civil War fort.
BTW, I should have clarified. NC coastal areas are either beaches along the barrier islands, or they are towns along a river or bay. The towns are built up with amenities like restaurants, bars and sight-seeing attractions. The beach areas are primarily housing and beaches. We do not really have anything like Mackinac Island. Southport and Beaufort are nice to visit, but I recommend that a family with kids should rent a beach house.
I would recommend Duck which hits all of your criteria.
Just be aware the the Outer Banks have cooler and rougher surf. I would call it more appropriate for teenagers. The paragliding at Kitty Hawk would also appeal to teenagers.
Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I'll start looking into those places!
