It turns out the aneurism that doctors thought would kill her in a week or two will take six months to a year. They say she must have moved when they were doing the first image making the aneurism look larger.

This is the second time in three years I’ve been told grave news only for the doctor to be wrong. Two and a half years ago a chief neurologist told me my wife would never emerge from a vegetative state. Two days after that she did.

Anyone else been through this?

Sorry, I have nothing to offer about erroneous prognosises. But I do want to congratulate you for your family's improved outcomes. Continued good health!

Making absolute predictions about any biological organism that is going through thousands of minute changes every minute in response to the world around it has got to be difficult. So much in medicine has to be based on experience and judgement. You know what they say about medicine...it is called practice for a reason. I'm sure the doc giving the prognosis is just as glad to be wrong as you are.

Look up the word "prognosis". According to Oxford, the definition is "the likely course of a disease or ailment". Emphasis on the word likely.

Then there's Merriam-Webster: "the prospect of recovery as anticipated from the usual course of disease..." Emphasis on usual.

Are you seeking to blame someone for something OP?

If that additional time is a good thing, glad she's getting it.

I’m simply wondering how common this is.

I’ve seldom heard of people coming out of hospice alive.

At this point I’m not sure if the extra time for my mom is a good thing. Looks like the rest of her life will be mostly doped up or in pain and suffering dementia.

They probably thought a rupture was imminent based on the size or the shape of the aneurysm (bubble in the artery).
