We were fine with English, but, we only were in Brussels and Bruges.

In Europe our experience has been that even when we try to speak a local language, people answer in English.

Enough people speak English that you can get by. The hotels and restaurants always have someone who speaks English. Most businesses have people who speak English well enough that you can make your purchases.

Perhaps a simple phrase book so you can look up things on the menu and not expect a waitress to stand there and translate the whole menu for you. Everywhere I ate, food was good. I also ate out of delicatessens and the big food and households good stores.

How do you get the most from a visit to Belgium? Keep travelling south and go to France!

I am being flippant. English should suffice. I have spent time across Belgium, and at the time my French was nothing special. Never had an issue speaking English.

Belgium is quite an international destination and as such many areas are used to dealing with tourists from across the world and english is widely understood.

The towns and cities are home to some beautiful architecture, good food and of course the famous Belgium Beer and traditional historic pubs and bars.

Belgium's is also home to frites (fries), with the traditional dipping sauce being Sauce andalouse.

Whenever you travel to a foreign country, you will get a lot more out of it if you can speak the local language.

Of course, that is difficult for most people to do.
