If I'm not mistaken, Tennessee borders more states than any other. Which state do you believe is the most similar to Tennessee? In terms of culture, any connections/relationships with other states, migration patters/growth, aspects of the major metros, etc.

OP, Missouri and Tennessee are both tied. They border 8 other states. IIRC, several others border 6 states, but none border 7.

And most similar is Arkansas, IMO.

There isn't an answer to this question. Western Tenn is more like Arkansas or Mississippi than it is North Carolina and the same is true that Eastern Tenn is like NC and Georgia more than it is Arkansas.

Kentucky is most similar culturally and geographically, and also borders seven states: Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, Tennessee and Missouri.

I agree that western TN is more like MS and AR, but it's not too dissimilar from eastern NC; both regions are considered to be the Deep South-ish regions of their respective states. In that respect, NC and TN are almost like mirror images of each other (but the coast makes a difference for NC obviously).

In some ways KY and TN are mirror images, but TN has more mid size cities and in that way is similar to NC.

I think what I am saying is you can turn the mirror either way.

Kentucky is Tennessee's half-sister. Pennsylvania is the father of both, but Kentucky's mother is Virginia, and Tennessee's mother is North Carolina. Tennessee knocked up Mississippi, which resulted in Arkansas. Ohio knocked up Kentucky, which resulted in Missouri.

This is beautiful, wish you could do it for all the southern states.

I lived in the Nashville area for 5 years many years ago. Kentucky was a close drive, and wasn't too dissimilar. But, I could still tell I'd crossed a border. Different areas of TN are very different from each other, so it would probably be the areas closest to the nearest next state that would be similar to that state, but no one particular state.
