My husband is a pilot and considering a job that would give him a base at Newark Airport. We don't want to live in NJ and are looking at areas in eastern PA that have excellent school districts. We've done a bit of research about New Hope and Doylestown, but we're also curious about other areas north of there. Ideally, we'd like to be in a smallish town or semi-rural environment but with decent proximity to schools/amenities. Given his schedule, he would not need to commute daily, more like on either side of 4-5 day trips. Thanks!

Anywhere in the Nazareth Area School District. It’s a straight shot on 78 (can even take 22 for sometime, if needed).

Northampton County School Districts

Nazareth Area and Saucon Valley School Districts are the best two districts in Northampton County which borders New Jersey.

If you haven't ruled out NJ completely, Lake Mohawk in Sparta Township roughly 50 miles from EWR airport is full of pilots.

I've known three pilots that worked out of EWR and lived in my School district, Southern Lehigh. It takes us about an hour and half from here, and that includes parking. According to google maps, it's 1 hour 16 minutes. We can get to PHL in about an hour. Route 78 is very close.

When we lived in Doylestown, our neighbor was a pilot for American and flew out of Newark. The trip from Doylestown to EWR is not bad - Pt Pleasant Pike to River Rd; cross over the River at Frenchtown and take 513 up to I78.

I left Long Island for east PA 15 years ago primarily because my 49 mile drive to EWR was becoming a real challenge. Moving to NJ or CT was not an option. After an extended search from the Doylestown to Poconos areas settled south of Emmaus to an old farmhouse on 8 acres. Almost always a 90 minute drive to the employee lot and no drama along the way. East Penn schools apparently very good and property taxes are less than half of what I was paying on LI. I was worried that good restaurants would be few and far between but that has not been the case. Overall, satisfied with the move. Good luck with your search.

Lots of EWR-based pilots live in Williams, Lower Saucon, & Upper Saucon Townships.

We live in a great luxury apartment complex right on I-78 (straight shot to Newark!), Madison Farms in Bethlehem Twp. There are pilots and airline staff living here, for the same reason I think. The entrance to I-78 is very close! Also across the street from a wonderful hospital, St. Lukes Anderson. Great complex here, big clubhouse to rent out, big pool, great gym, lots to do nearby! I recommend renting for a year or two to explore the area before buying.

Eastern PA is a "pilot ghetto". Lots of United pilots that live there and commute to EWR. It is a move I am thinking of doing myself.
