I think you're worried about the wrong free speech threat.
Yes, he wanted to.

President Trump promised Wednesday to "take a strong look" at the country's libel laws, saying they are a "sham and a disgrace and do not represent American values and American fairness."
Trump made his comments at the beginning of a Cabinet meeting.
"You can't say things that are false, knowingly false, and be able to smile as money pours into your bank account," said Trump
The quote above was followed by another example of the press saying something they knew was false, so that more money would pour into their bank account.
In other words, the article is a prime example of why the libel laws need to be changed.
We need more solid media sources like Breitbart, not 3rd rate sources like NYT.
Despite my knowing that you are not being forthright, I will agree with your statement.

Real newsmen do not need an office. They need something like a Jeep (Wrangler), so their "office" can go to where the news is.
Always has been. The difference is, until the 60's, they were rich people who put America first, from then until around Y2K, they became rich "Globalists," who had a disdain for everything that made America great. (BTW, it isn't the corporations that are the problem, it is the executives that run them, and the fact that we don't realize "corporation" is just another word for a government of-by-and-for the shareholders.)

They put themselves first. Always did.
