These little fish feed everything from osprey and eagles to seals and otters to tuna and whales, cod and halibut, and when they're abundant, they can make a huge positive difference therefore on the ecosystem. They are anadromous fish that need to return to fresh water to spawn - if they can't do that, they can't reproduce. Maine has been restoring access to historical spawning habitat by adding fish ladders and removing dams, greatly increasing the numbers of these keystone creatures.
