Well, this Colorado elk needs to work on his soccer form a little more, but you can't fault his enthusiasm!

Default Otters Use Tools to Spare Their teeth

Sea Otters eat a lot of shellfish and breaking them open with their teeth can damage their teeth, which can have serious consequences.

By using tools, e.g. using a rock as an anvil to smash a clam on, these cute critters can eat more efficiently and spare their precious teeth. In a new study published in Science, scientists not only documented these behaviors, but also observed that female otters were more likely to use these more heady methods of accessing their meals, as well as more likely to teach their young the techniques.

Not exactly the same as a clever wild animal, OL. Nimble was trained of course. But this dog was way cool at Westminster recently. You go, dog.

Green heron using bread as bait to catch a fish. Notice how it doesn't let the big fish that it can't eat take the bait :-).

I've always liked the "canopy feeding" strategy some herons use while fishing. They spread their wings over the water to create a shady spot. Fish favor shady spots, so it lures them closer. The heron gets rewarded with lunch.
