Ellsworth at one time hosted Titan ICBMs. Those were replaced with Minutemen. It was also a SAC bomber base with nukes. Surrounding the base were four Army Nike missile defense batteries, also nuclear armed. That all made Ellsworth and the entire northern Black Hills area a primate target for strategic attack. Then they got rid of all the missiles and the current B1 is not nuclear capable. No nukes here. That moved the area down on the target list. ................. BUT..............the new B21 is coming. It will replace the B2 as our strategic nuclear armed aircraft. And with it comes nuclear weapons. Ellsworth and Rapid City will once again be back on the primary hit list for our enemies.

Add to that the issue of current ground water contamination from the base and you might want to consider where you move if you move here. Check out where the water will come from that comes to your home. Within 2 miles of the base they found 26 private wells contaminated. Make sure that is not what you would be using for your water..

Complete resolution of the contaminated water is expected to be Sept 2024. As I write this, that is two years, three months out. You might want to get a water test if you are moving to that side of town.
