Hello,

Recently I've been down a "virtual" rabbit hole on how awful the ticks are in VA.

We have them here in CA but not badly. Granted, we don't spend a TON of time outside, but we'd prefer to if we have a space to.

Anyway, are ticks as bad a people are saying? Will they still come around if you fill your yard with rocks/gravel/concrete?

Things you do to mitigate it? I know people are saying tick checks nightly, which seems like SUCH A PAIN to be honest.

I guess all in all, wondering of this affects quality of life for most?

Thanks!

They are there and there are things to mitigate them. I don't use a service, but there seem to be sprays and such. First, mow the lawn areas low. Secondly, discourage critters like rabbits and such. Thirdly wear white socks, shoes and so forth to make them more visible. Don't sit on the ground, use a blanket (light color) and garden on a stool.

Gosh, if you remove a tick within 36 to 48 hours., it's unlikely to cause any harm or disease.

Webster is correct - ticks are carried by animals. If you fence in an area where you spend most of your outdoor time, animals can't carry ticks in.

Don't use a tick sprays or chemicals on your lawn. It will kill ladybugs, fireflies, native bees, etc.

Lyme disease is named after Lyme CT where it was found. I've lived in New York and Boston suburbs with many more ticks than Virginia. Just follow the medical directions to remove the tick. Pace the tick in a plastic bag. Your doctor can check to see if it was completely removed and if he thinks the tick should be tested for disease.

There are several Lyme disease tests - ELISA test and a Western Blot - make sure both tests are done.

My last tick bite was almost three years ago. Easily removed.

Thank you all, it helps ease my mind knowing that there are things we can do to still enjoy life without having to worry about tick borne illnesses.

One gift I give to folks having new kids are picnic blankets. They are usually waterproof. If getting one, get one that is a single light color without patterns or designs. It helps ensure there are not any little critters around the infant.

Seems to be more ticks this year...I have removed 5 or 6 so far, more than the last 3 years combined.

Are you walking in the woods or gardening?

My last tick was from my dog. The tick ditched my dog and climbed on me during a car ride. It was big enough where I felt it crawling on me.
