54-Year-Old Denny’s Closes on Crime-Plagued Street Near Oakland Airport

A 24-hour diner on a crime-plagued street near Oakland International Airport has closed for good.

Denny's, the classic casual American restaurant with more than 1,500 locations worldwide, has closed its location at 601 Hegenberger Road.

A statement from Denny's confirmed the decision to shut the 54-year-old diner, noting the area's well-documented issues with thefts and car break-ins.

"The safety and well-being of Denny’s team members and valued guests is our top priority," the statement said. "Weighing those factors, the decision has been made to close this location."

If this keeps up, all that will be left is franchised fast food and gas stations.

I hope Oakland Airport has lots of dining options as obviously there is no eating place on Hegenberger between 880 and the airport.

It's obviously an opportunity for an Uber driver using the newly introduced bullet proof Cybertruck.

No one can dispute Oakland is one of the most dangerous cities in California (along with Stockton, Compton, Richmond and Vallejo), and that area near the Oakland airport, per the thread title, is among the worst of it. Oakland has also been without a police chief for a year.

That said, New Orleans, Birmingham, St. Louis, Cleveland, Detroit, Kansas City, Pueblo (Colorado), Milwaukee and several other cities still top the US list in terms of violent crime.

It seems that Oakland is only #12 one list of worst cities for crime, and the first in California. It's not in the top 10 on two other lists that I found. I worked in Oakland for 17 years and lived there a few of those, but when visiting family in the Bay Area and flying into OAK that neighborhood has gotten worse since the 1980s. There are other businesses in other cities closing up due to the crime, such as the 4 Walgreens in the Boston area. This one gets more media attention because of the previous story of the In & Out, the burger joint that people obsess over for some reason.

I remember noticing all the food venues opening on hegenberger rd and thought that’s great. Sad to see them all leaving. But the voters have control and they decide their destiny.

This reminds me of the Hogan's Heroes episode where prisoners kept escaping from Stalag 13 and "search parties" of guards were being sent out to find them. Sgt. Schultz says to the Gestapo commandant, "If this keeps up there won't be any men left to guard the prisoners". The commandant responds, "if this keeps up, Sergeant, there WON'T BE ANY PRISONERS LEFT TO GUARD!"

If little or nothing changes expect the number of businesses closing or leaving to pick up steam.

I wonder if the crimes in these cities are being accurately counted?
Are all these cities using the same definition of crime?
I don’t know if it even matters but is crime counted as a call in, a written report, a conviction and do they even count to ones they let go and refuse to prosecute?
Call me a skeptic, I think these crime numbers can be easily played or modified to suit the current need.
