Really, anyone nearby who uses GA Power.

We just had a presentation by a LGCY Power Co. trying to sell solar power in the neighborhood. Other companies have tried to drum up interest here before, but no takers.

Our budget electric has always hovered around $140. a month, but has just gone up by about $40 a month and the idea seems a lot more cost effective. Of course, there is a lot more research to be done, but the guy told my husband it would cost us $97. a month for both electricity and to buy the panels, and the deal is fully transferable to the next buyers.

Further, in the past they wanted to put the panels on the front of the house, but this company would put them on the back, south facing. I’m not at all concerned about lack of sun.

From what I've read, make sure this is the home you'll stay in for 10 - 20 years. The payback is several years. Plus, down the road, many buyers may have no interest in your home if they have to take over the deal you signed. As someone who is looking to move to a warmer climate, I think I'd be a no on buying a home with solar panels that were not paid for.

The original deal sounded tempting, but it turned out to be incorrect. The nitty gritty was not very good.

Original guesstimate was $97. a month for the panels and all electricity. Fully transferable to the next owner. Who could object to that? It turns out that GA Power has a vise grip on the rules, and they are only in their favor.

If you disconnect your home system from GPC grid, they don’t care what you do.

I don’t see that happening.

Down here in South Florida, the solar panel salesmen have developed a bad reputation for fast-talking sales pitches (something akin to timeshare salesmen) so it's good that you went into this with your eyes wide open. It would take a decade or more to earn back your investment in the very best of scenarios. I'm sure it varies from state to state somewhat, but some general info in this article can be applied...

Good article. In our case, GA Power will only allow the 6kw free, even if I generated plenty of juice for my needs. They will still bill me for more than that and they will not credit me, or pay me if my panels generate more than that. We don’t pay income tax, so the tax credit is not an incentive.

Really, whoever posted the picture of solar panels destroyed by hail was a big factor. I’m sure any savings I got from Solar would probably get spent on insurance.

Yeah, I've always wondered about hail damage, especially in places like Texas where hailstones get as big as grapefruits.

GA Power installed a 'solar farm' a few miles away from where my mom lives in Effingham and though it's rather small (maybe two acres) it made all the older people in the neighborhood raise an eyebrow. She did say she'd rather have that "ugly" solar farm there than yet another sub-division, though.
