I have been subbing continually for 26 years. Currently licensed in Wyoming, and working as a digital nomad in Colombia. I have subbed the above classes in three states. Absolutely horrible in all three. Why on Earth do they place native, teenage, Spanish speakers in Spanish I? It really takes away from the learning environment. Seems like if they havent developed advanced usage by high school, they should call it quits and make them double down on English. A total taxpayer ripoff. Now, Alg I part I , with many of the same students is mostly a disgrace. It is a dumping ground. Many seem to accept math illiteracy. It represents a combination of underachievement, bad upbringing, and a gigantic failure of the K-8s for promoting them without even knowing the multiplication tables. These classes seem to harbor defiance and disrespect. Sure as heck wasn't worth the 150 per day they are paying. Any comments?

Placing native Spanish speakers in Spanish 1 gives low achievers the opportunity to find some success.
I agree that Algebra 1 is a dumping ground.
Many schools today are filled with apathetic students who don't care if they graduate or not. Educators are forced to make some difficult choices in order to keep their jobs, including graduating students who are not deserving.

We found that native speakers, primarily Spanish although a couple French, did not do well in those Language classes. They're more based on formal structures while the kids spoke it colloquially. Plus, the kids were from former colonies (Central America for Spanish and Central Africa Republic) where the based languages had diverged.
