Hi I'm from New York, and my wife and I stayed at the Harrington about five times and really became attached to it. Now that it's closed, can anyone recommend any hotel that's in the same general area (Downtown) and also has a similar, inexpensive price plan? Thanks!
Hotel Harrington was a part of old Washington, DC, a living time capsule. It would be impossible to replicate it in modern times. The fact that it survived as long as it did was almost a miracle in itself. It was always a budget hotel but by the end it wasn't even really that, it was just falling down (literally as well as figuratively). I went to Harry's (the downstairs bar and grill) right before it closed, and it was poorly run and just hanging on. You really couldn't get another hotel to survive in downtown DC the way the Hotel Harrington did, it really was kind of grandfathered into the landscape of downtown. Maybe the best you can do nowadays is to hunt for deals at the more established places like the Marriott or try to find a reasonable rate at an Airbnb somewhere close by where you want to be. Downtown DC hotels are expensive and there's really no way of getting around that, at least not on baseline prices.
OP....There are a few smaller/older properties that offer a non-chain vibe with lower prices that you might find attractive. Check out the State Plaza Hotel in Foggy Bottom, the Hotel Lombardy in Downtown DC and the Tabard Inn near Dupont Circle.

I've stayed in two of those three over the years. I would definitely add The River Inn to that list. It is pretty close to State Plaza Hotel and Hotel Lombardy. It is within easy walking distance to Rock Creek Park, the Kennedy Center, Constitution Avenue, Watergate, and the walking trail along the Potomac. It is a well-loved favorite of visiting George Washington University parents.
