This is for the FWIW category....

Been watching more old movies and saw an old Western with Tex Ritter called 'Down the Wyoming Trail'. Unlike most westerns, it was actually filmed in Wyoming, in winter, in and around Jackson Hole. There are scenes in filmed in town that are actually the real Jackson Hole. So if you want to see it like it 'was', it's a good movie to watch. Includes an elk stampede too LOL

Thanks! We're also watching old Westerns. Just the other night we watched Mountain Men with Charlton Heston and Brian Keith from the 1970s, and it is filmed all over Jackson Hole at a time when most Western productions went to Mexico or Canada. Fantastic scenery. I love that movie, but I still have a hard time with the dreadful wigs they put on Heston and Keith. But that's the '70s for you!

And then there is Shane, of course, also filmed in Jackson Hole. Some years ago we went on a "location hunt" with the help of the Jackson Chamber of Commerce and found several key locations such as Ernie's cabin, still there, but we weren't able to pin down the town or the Starrett farm except for them being somewhere in the valley north of Jackson. Good to have something to look for next time!

Ernie's cabin:

The point I wanted to make about that old Tex Ritter movie is that things were filmed as they were.. looks like few or no sets, perhaps the scenes inside the jail and the remote cabin were sets. In one shot from inside a building looking out, the words 'Bank of Jackson' appear in reverse lol, and old photos of the town show some of the same buildings. You can bet a lot of the extras were just the locals. So not a sophisticated film.. but most Wyoming towns weren't either at the time.
