1. The Golf Club At Eagle Mountain

City: Fountain Hills, AZ
Category: Golf
Telephone: (480) 816-1234
Address: 14915 E. Eagle Mountain Pkwy.
Insider Pick:

Description: Eagle Mountain lets you look down on the East Valley as you golf. Perched as it is in the foothills of the McDowell Mountains, many prominent peaks add to the course’s picturesque quality. Eagle Mountain has grass from tee to green, though its landscaping is nontraditional and it’s not a true target course. When you’re off the fairways and greens, you’re in the desert, where saguaros and desert scrub dot the surroundings. The 6,755-yard, par-71 course, designed by Scott Miller and opened in January 1996, takes advantage of desert ravines to make the course, which wraps around Eagle Mountain, seem set apart rather than an expected part of the Eagle Mountain master-planned community. One of the best examples of the course’s scenic charms is the closing hole, one of the most beautiful in the Valley and a demanding par 5. The tees are at the highest point on the golf course, with the green at the bottom of a slope. A lake and bunkers sit to the right, and the hole is framed by a dramatic view of Red Mountain.Greens fees, including cart, range from $195 in high season to $65 from June to mid-September. Twilight rates are available. The service and ambience of Eagle Mountain are comparable to those of a private country club. The amenities include a clubhouse, full practice facility, golf shop, lessons, locker rooms, and showers.

4. Fountain Park

City: Fountain Hills, AZ
Category: Parks & Recreation
Address: 12925 N. Saguaro Blvd.

Description: A 64-acre park surrounds Fountain Lake, where Fountain Hills’ namesake fountain can shoot water up to 560 feet into the air. Normally, the fountain’s plume, created by two 600-horsepower turbine pumps, is 330 feet. (A third pump is kept idle as a backup, and it’s only on the rare occasion when the third pump is turned on that the 560-foot stream is possible.) The fountain has a utilitarian purpose: to help evaporate effluent (treated wastewater). Through most of the year it operates for 15 minutes at the top of the hour 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The schedule can increase during winter when there’s more effluent to evaporate. The fountain’s plume can be seen from the Beeline Highway shooting up over mountaintops. The park is a perfect place for picnicking on the grass, jogging, and playing on playground equipment. It’s home to an 18-hole championship disc golf course, restrooms, and a chilled drinking fountain. Families with small children find it to be one of the more relaxing parks in the Northeast Valley.
