Description: The City of Phoenix Aviation Department has managed this airport 24 miles southwest of downtown Phoenix since 1968. The airport was built in 1943 and was originally operated by the US Navy. It served as a support facility for the nearby aircraft division of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. In 1951 the Navy expanded the airport as a base for military aircraft storage, which was its mission until 1965, when the US General Services Administration took over with plans to phase it out. The major tenant is Lufthansa Airlines’ Airline Training Center of Arizona. The airport serves the general-aviation needs of western Maricopa County. The control tower operates 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. The airport offers fuel sales, overnight parking, a pilot shop, a flight-planning and lounge area, an aircraft wash rack, and a conference room.
