Description: The 297-bed Del E. Webb hospital, built in 1988, serves the communities of the Northwest Valley. The first homes were completed in 1978, and the final home was delivered in 1998, for a total of 17,000 homes and 31,000 residents. Like its neighbor, Sun City West, now owned by Pulte Homes, is self-contained, with dozens of shops, banks, restaurants, several golf courses, 4 recreation centers, and a hospital. In the same vein, it mandates that at least one member of a household be age 55 or older. Sun City West also has a Sheriff’s Posse to keep crime down and a Prides volunteer organization to keep neighborhoods tidy. It calls itself “Flag City U.S.A.” owing to the hundreds of American flags lining the major thoroughfare, R.H. Johnson Boulevard, under the guidance of the local American Legion post.The residents’ get-up-and-go attitude is reflected in the diversity of clubs and social groups at their disposal. A club list from the visitor center, for instance, lists over 100 organizations, from the Agriculture Club to the Yoga Club.
