Description: On the opposite end of the Valley from the Sun Cities lies the community of Sun Lakes, which has grown to more than 35,000 people. It’s about 20 miles from downtown Phoenix, but is still considered part of the Valley because of its proximity to I-10. As you’re heading southeast to Tucson, Sun Lakes springs out of agricultural fields like an oasis of towering trees and ample golf courses. Here, too, active adults find plenty of ways to have fun and stay busy with social clubs, recreation opportunities, places of worship, and performing arts. You’ll find travel groups, social groups, 81 holes of golf, aerobics, dancing, card groups, and computer clubs—to name just a few of the hundreds of activities listed at clubhouses and in community newspapers. Every major holiday brings some kind of get-together at the luxurious clubhouses.Sun Lakes was conceived about 30 years ago when developer Ed Robson envisioned an active-adult community with a “youthful spirit.” The community was built in three phases, beginning in 1972, and is currently sold out.Its 3,500 acres are organized around the 5 country clubs, called Sun Lakes, Cottonwood, Palo Verde, Ironwood, and Oakwood. Many of the streets are circular, with the golf courses and lakes as the focal points. The homes range in price from $150,000 to $500,000 and range in size from 1,444 to 3,497 square feet. Sun Lakes also offers luxury 1- and 2-bedroom retirement apartments for independent senior living.Although the growing city of Chandler and regional shopping malls are fairly close to home, Sun Lakes residents can get much of their shopping done within the community. Supermarkets, banks, professional offices, a health center, and specialty shops are at the major intersections.
