Description: If you’re a movie buff as well as a golf buff (or even just a golf-movie buff), you may recognize this golf venue as one of the sites for Kevin Costner’s Tin Cup. In fact, the lake on the 16th hole was created just for the movie (we hope it poses less trouble to you than it did to Mr. Costner). Located south of Green Valley on the east side of I-19 at exit 40, Tubac is a traditional championship course that winds along both sides of the Santa Cruz River. At this spot, however, the dry riverbed to the north becomes a viable stream feeding the beautiful, stately cottonwood trees that contribute to this course’s appeal. The setting seems more quaint and rural than Southwestern. Nine new holes, designed by local golf architect Ken Kavanaugh, were added in 2006, bringing the total to 27.The original 18 holes were the work of pioneer golf course architect Red Lawrence. One of its signature holes is the long par 5 Rancho #4, known as Tubac’s Tin Cup Hole. You’ll find a driving range, practice greens, and restaurant and lounge at the resort, plus it’s just minutes away from the delightful Tubac Village (see the Day Trips & Weekend Getaways chapter). A clubhouse, golf pro shop, and practice facility round out the package.
