Description: This is the largest park in the Maricopa County park system, comprising more than 29,000 acres of Sonoran Desert mountains. Elevations range from 1,400 feet at the park entrance to 4,000 feet at the highest peak. You’ll find plenty of picnic areas, 11 ramadas for use by large groups, a mountain bike trail system, a horse staging area, and 2 wheelchair-accessible trails. The family campground has 40 sites, each with a picnic table and grill. There are no electrical hookups and no dump stations at the park, located about 15 miles west of Peoria. Comfort stations have showers. Cost is $25 nightly for developed sites.

It’s rarely crowded and makes for an ideal place to explore the desert. The 30,000-acre park includes 240 picnic sites with grills, tables (a few have small covers), and restrooms; a 40-site campground; and a group campground that requires reservations. There are 11 group picnic areas available. The park also has a horse-staging area, a 10-mile competitive mountain-biking course, and 25 miles of shared-use trails plus 2.5 miles of pedestrian-only trails. The park has 2 barrier-free trails, which lead to ancient Native American petroglyphs. Numerous sites dot the park, and educators can provide information on guided hikes. To get there from downtown Phoenix, take I-10 west 18 miles to AZ 303. Proceed north on AZ 303 to Olive Avenue. Travel west 4 miles on Olive to the park entrance.
