The Gilpin Hotel started slot machine tournaments in Colorado, and they still have the biggest. This historic building has the original Victorian-style facade from 1869. It’s brickwork adorned with ornate hardwood. The Mineshaft Bar has been a local hangout for more than 100 years. It’s full of memorabilia and offers nightly live entertainment that sometimes includes karaoke singing. There’s free valet parking across the street. Lucille Malone’s restaurant is named after the hotel’s resident ghost. After Lucille’s fiancé died after being run over by a wagon in front of the hotel, the distraught schoolteacher hurled herself off a balcony. Locals say she’s been hanging around ever since.
