5. The Thomas House

City: Central City, CO
Category: Tours & Attractions
Telephone: (303) 582-5283
Address: 209 Eureka Street

Description: This is an 1874 Greek-Revival Victorian house. It’s mostly yellow with white trim. However, Marsha Thomas was a free thinker, and on a trip back East she bought a gallon of salmon-colored paint for the porch. During every world war, the government ordered gold mining to stop in an effort to stabilize the economy, so in World War I Central City took a dive. Ben Thomas, vice president of the local mercantile store, no longer had any business. In 1917, the Thomases locked the house and relocated to Denver. Marsha visited for summer operas, but they never moved back. All the furnishings—from spices to fine art to the 13 different varieties of clocks—are intact from 1917. The corset of 4-foot, 11-inch Marsha hangs beside the long johns of 6-foot-plus-tall Ben. Because Marsha was so short, Ben cut the legs off the kitchen’s wood-burning stove so it would match her height. The house is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in summer only, with $5 admission for adults. (If you tour the Gilpin History Museum, too, the total cost is only $8 for both.)
