3. Joey Garlic’S

City: Newington, CT
Category: Restaurants
Telephone: (860) 372-4620
Address: 150 Kitts Ln.

Description: Italian and proud of it, Joey Garlic’s Newington location features grinders, salads, and a great selection of appetizers (some people come just for the anchovy pizzette, crispy fried ribs, or fried dough). But it’s the old-fashioned burgers and milk shakes that have made Joey’s reputation. The thick shakes come in a number of flavors, from cinnamon caramel to creamsicle, and the hamburgers are ground fresh twice daily. Joey Garlic’s has two other locations. At the 372 Scott Swamp Rd. (Route 6) location in Farmington (860-678-7231), in addition to the delights of the Newington location, you can get New Haven–style brick-oven pizza and more pasta dishes. The other, newer location is a smaller pizza shop at 353 Park Rd. in West Hartford. All serve huge portions, at reasonable prices, and all fill up quickly.

4. Olympia Diner

City: Newington, CT
Category: Restaurants
Telephone: (860) 666-9948
Address: 3413 Berlin Tpke.

Description: With its huge neon sign atop a classic metallic diner, the Olympia has been the Berlin Turnpike’s great road-food destination for over 50 years. Where else can you get a ham steak with a side of mashed potatoes and gravy? This could just as easily be listed under breakfast and lunch, with grilled English muffins and hot, fluffy omelets. But the shiny metal everywhere! It must be road food. Unlike some diners, though, they serve beer and wine. Play the individual jukebox at your table, perhaps the classic Fats Domino tune, “Blueberry Hill.” And you’re sure to find your thrill here at the Olympia Diner, right in the strip mall heart of Connecticut.
