Address: 205 E. Thompson Rd.

Description: In 1938 after the great hurricane, John Hoenig cleared land and created America’s first asphalt-paved oval racetrack. The 5⁄8-mile-high banked track was huge by the standards of the day, called a “super speedway,” and Thompson became known as the Indianapolis of the East. Today it is still an amazing short track, hosting NASCAR Whelen All American Series events. There is a variety of races, including the NASCAR Modifieds, as well as late models and mini stocks. Fast Track Concessions provides the hot dogs, kettle popcorn, and beer. The speedway also has an 18-hole golf course and a driving range (www.racewaygolf.com), along with the Raceway Restaurant.

2. Quaddick State Park

City: Thompson, CT
Category: Tours & Attractions
Telephone: (860) 928-6121
Address: 818 Town Farm Rd.

Description: This area was once the summer camp of the Nipmuck Indians, and today is a haven for boating, fishing, swimming, and more. The reservoir is 466 acres, with a sandy beach by the swimming area. The facility includes changing houses, restrooms, a picnic pavilion, ball fields, horseshoe pits, and food concessions, and so makes for a full day out with the family. For those who want to Jet Ski or take the boat out, there’s a launch located north of the beach. Some red-blazed trails snake through the woodlands as well, making a small, 1.5-mile loop. This park is open year-round, and only on summer weekends will you have to pay.
