Description: There are 3 wooded campgrounds in this huge state forest on the edge of Rhode Island. The Green Falls is 3 miles east of town, with 18 forested sites next to a pond for fishing and swimming. Mount Misery’s campground has 22 sites and a stream for fishing. You can bring a motor home to these campgrounds as well, but there are no hookups or dumping stations. You can also bring your pets. The third campground is for equestrians only, the Frog Hollow Horse Camp, with 18 sites in a lightly wooded area. And, of course, the 30 miles of trails and the boat launch onto Pachaug Pond make this state forest a great place to camp.

Description: The first patent for a complete bicycle was issued to Connecticut inventor Pierre Lallement in 1866, and in 1878 Albert Pope produced the first high-wheeled Columbia bicycles here. Many people who could not afford horses, and women especially, found new freedom with this ingenious machine. Connecticut’s largest state forest is the perfect place to find that freedom again, on a network of dirt roads made for horse and buggies, or perhaps made for you and your bike. You’ll see old cellar holes and endless stone walls among the oaks and pines, as well a giant rhododendron sanctuary, a coniferous swamp full of these rare plants. In the winter you can snowmobile here, and there are plenty of hiking trails, too, including one up Mount Misery, with a great panoramic view across eastern Connecticut and Rhode Island. Camping is also available in three different sites at the park.
