1. George Washington Tavern

City: Washington Depot, CT
Category: Restaurants
Telephone: (860) 868-6633
Address: 20 Bee Brook Rd.

Description: This beautiful, deep red wood 1850 building by the Shepaug River greets you just north of Washington Depot’s “town center” (don’t blink). In the summer the tavern has a flagstone patio open, and in the winter there’s a huge open fireplace indoors to keep everyone toasty and comfortable. The menu includes such American classics as chicken potpie, meat loaf, macaroni and cheese, fried oysters, chili, and George Washington’s favorite cherry pie. Game and gamebirds are available in the winter, and soft-shell crabs in the summer. After dinner, try the candy cane–infused vodka “George’s Nightcap,” a sweet treat. If you’re there for Sunday brunch after a weekend at one of the nearby inns, try the eggs Benedict by the fireplace and read the Sunday funnies.
