1. Wilderness Lake Campground & Resort

City: Willington, CT
Category: Accommodations
Telephone: (860) 684-6352
Address: 150 Village Hill

Description: This family campground set on Wilderness Lake in Willington has everything you want, from picnic tables and fire rings to a full-service general store. And the bathrooms! Heated, flush toilets, warm showers . . . it’s almost like you’re not camping at all. The RV and camper sites are located around the game room and dining hall area, while the tent sites are at the north end of the lake, nicely secluded in a forest. Sites 1, 2, and 3 are all the way on the other side of the lake, and hiking trails leave the campground directly from them. If you like peace and quiet, that’s the place to reserve. On the other hand, if you want all the joys of family camping, then stay on the west side. There is swimming in the lake, volleyball, and a playground, and there’s even a 9-hole miniature golf course. How’s that for roughing it?

2. Willington Pizza

City: Willington, CT
Category: Restaurants
Telephone: (860) 429-7433
Address: 25 River Rd. (Route 32)

Description: If you’re headed up to UConn or Stafford Springs for a sporting event, someone will suggest a stop at Willington Pizza. It is inevitable, and it is a good idea. The red potato pizza is their most famous creation, although their taco and cheeseburger pizzas are also classics. They also have hot oven grinders, sandwiches, Italian dishes, and a variety of cheese-dripping appetizers. There’s a good selection of beers, including local Ten Penny Ale, and the milk shakes are excellent. This place is a huge favorite among UConn students and families, as well as Stafford Motor Speedway drivers and crews, but also brings in pizza lovers from across the nation.
