5. Outback Crab Shack

City: St. Augustine, FL
Category: Restaurants
Telephone: (904) 522-0500
Address: 8155 County Rd. 13 North

Description: The last time I went to Outback Crab Shack, my husband and I heard a thud next to the table and looked down to see a four-foot water moccasin that had dropped out of the rafters and landed on the floor a few feet away from our feet. Within seconds a couple men from the kitchen ambled out and captured the snake using a method involving a broom and a bucket. Within minutes, lunch proceeded as if nothing ever happened. That’s what you get when you have dinner in a shack on a river in the middle if the woods far away from the things of man.Technically in St. Augustine, but feeling more like outer-Mandarin, Outback Crab Shack, along with a scant handful of old-school fish camps along the inland waterways, represents the best of the old-Florida lifestyle. Nestled among overhanging water oaks, Outback serves up heaping portions of fish, shrimp, and other seafood, but locals come for the kettle-boiled platter—a combination of crawfish, garlic crabs, clams, blue crabs or shrimp with corn, sausage, and potatoes delivered to the table on a huge metal platter. It’s meant to be shared, so come with a group and be ready to get messy. Dine indoors or out on the deck, depending on the weather. On the weekend, Outback often books live music during the day, but the deck gets packed quickly, so come early if you don’t fancy waiting. After lunch, take a walk along the dock—a great vantage point for alligator and turtle viewing. Open seven days a week for lunch and dinner.
