Description: For truly awe-inspiring views that stretch as far as 100 miles across 5 New England states, a visit to the summit of Mount Greylock is a must. At 3,491 feet, this is the highest peak in Massachusetts. You can opt to reach the summit via the 9-mile auto road (expect hordes of cars slowly winding their way up in the autumn). Or choose to hike from the base (and you will easily fulfill your day’s exercise quota!). If you decide to drive to the top, consider a short, looping hike. The reservation has a total of 50 miles of marked walking trails—several start from the summit parking lot and are doable for casual day hikers. At the top, Bascom Lodge offers dining and rustic overnight accommodations. Note, too that the auto road is open only from late May through Oct.
