Description: Just 10 miles north of Boston, the Fells is a rocky, hilly 2,500-acre parcel that offers a wilderness experience for all levels of outdoorsiness, from rugged backwoods types to weekend dabblers. The reservation spans several towns, including Malden, Medford, Stoneham, Melrose, and Winchester. The 1-mile Long Pond Trail takes just an hour and is a good choice for first-timers. Experienced hikers will want to take on the Skyline Trail, which has nearly 7 miles of woodland terrain and great views of the Boston skyline from the Wright Observation Tower. Among the other park diversions, some of the trails are designated for mountain biking, there are boat rentals at Spot Pond in Stoneham, and the 10-acre Sheepfold area is a popular meet-up place for local dogs and their owners.
