1. Smith College Museum Of Art

City: Northampton, MA
Category: Tours & Attractions
Telephone: (413) 585-2760

Description: Thanks in large part to generous alumnae donors, Smith has an art museum that rivals those in major metropolitan areas. Housed on campus in the Brown Fine Arts Center, the modern redbrick and steel building’s 4 floors of sky-lit galleries bring together an impressive permanent collection with strong selections of 19th- and 20th-century European and American art. You can’t miss one of the museum’s most notable works; Mexican artist Rufino Tamayo’s 43-foot mural Nature and the Artist: The Work of Art and the Observer was commissioned by the college in 1943 and is the centerpiece of the museum’s atrium space. Closed Mon.

Telephone: (413) 586-5366
Address: 125 A Pleasant St.

Description: This abandoned century-old underground train station has all the trappings of a speakeasy: an unmarked entrance, overstuffed leather chairs, and dim lighting. Martinis are the specialty and the menu has dozens of choices. The narrow room is often packed, so go early if you want to chat.
