1. Longfellow’S Wayside Inn

City: Sudbury, MA
Category: Accommodations
Telephone: (978) 443-1776
Address: 72 Wayside Inn Rd.

Description: Set back on the old Boston Post Road in the quiet town of Sudbury, this classic stagecoach inn has been welcoming “man and beast” since 1716. Originally named the Red House Tavern, the inn was renamed the Wayside Inn in honor of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s book of poems, Tales of a Wayside Inn, which includes his most well-known work, Paul Revere’s Ride. The 9 guest rooms, or “bed chambers,” are exactly what one would expect—and want—in a colonial inn with sloped wide-plank floors, simple white bedspreads, and period and reproduction antiques; each has a private bath. Rates include a full breakfast at the inn’s restaurant. Bonus, too, that this is a nonprofit historic site, so room rates are low. Leave time to wander the Wayside Historic District, which is on the National Register of Historic Places and encompasses 125 acres of woodland, fields, and trails and includes an operating historic grist mill and a 1-room schoolhouse that are open for tours (limited days and hours; check ahead).
