Description: Camping on the 300-acre Washburn Island in Waquoit Bay should be considered a privilege as well as a luxury. This beautiful island is now managed by the state, and campers must have permits (see information below). Eleven sites are available, nine for families and two for groups of no more than 25. The reserve offers a group rate of $25. Facilities consist of composting toilets and outhouses; the island has no electricity or fresh water. Only hibachis and Coleman-type stoves can be used for cooking. Access to the island across a narrow tidal channel is possible only by private boat—your own. Camping ends in mid-Oct.Permits cost $8 per night for Massachusetts residents, $10 for out-of-staters.

2. Falmouth Airpark

Description: This one-runway airport is the centerpiece of “Cape Cod’s only fly-in community,” a residential zone where many homes have hangars for their planes the way other people have garages for cars. The 2,400-foot paved airstrip is open to the public and charters. There is a wash-down station available.
