Insider Pick:

Description: An obvious must-stop for stamp hobbyists, this museum has a lot to offer almost anyone with even a passing interest in history, the arts, sports, or other cultures. The museum was opened in 1963 on the campus of Regis College with the stamp collection of Cardinal Spellman, former Archbishop of New York, and over the years has expanded to include more than 2 million stamps. On permanent display is a collection of philatelic rarities, including the world’s first postage stamp, a British 1840 Penny Black, and the first American stamp, which bears the image of Benjamin Franklin and dates from 1847. Prior special exhibits have included “Delivering the Mail,” “Art with Stamps and the Mail,” and stamps commemorating the 50th anniversary of John F. Kennedy’s inauguration. With their colorful images and real-life stories, even in the age of e-mail, postage stamps have a lot of appeal for kids. For families there are scavenger hunts, design-a-stamp materials, and puzzles. Best of all, kids get a free packet of stamps to begin their own collection. Be sure to stop at the museum shop, where you can pick up stamps on almost any theme—a thoughtful gift. The museum is open Thurs through Sun with additional days during school vacation weeks and summer.
