Description: You won’t find any Norse gods at Val Halla, but if you can avoid the brook on the 18th hole and come in somewhere around the 72 par, you might feel like one. Built in 1965 and expanded to 18 holes in the 1980s, the course is owned by the town of Cumberland, a pleasant suburb north of Portland. There’s a whole complex of entertainments here, from tennis courts to a driving range to the Viking Grill. The place opens at 7 each morning, and you could easily fill a whole day playing 18 holes, having lunch at the grill, and then pulling on the tennis shoes. The course itself is 6,568 yards, and because it was designed in two phases, it has a different feel on the back nine. The facilities are excellent and include a well-stocked pro shop, a practice green and bunker, club and cart rental, and instruction. You can wind down with a cold beverage on the big deck off the back of the clubhouse overlooking the course.
