1. Pilgrim’S Inn

City: Deer Isle, ME
Category: Accommodations
Telephone: (207) 348-6615 or (888) 778-75
Address: Main St.

Description: A gambrel-roofed barn of a place centrally located in Deer Isle village, this 1793 inn is on the National Register. Rooms are comfortable and commodious, and they offer water views, private baths, and their own sitting areas. Each has a different decor scheme, but they typically have Oriental or braided rugs on hardwood floors and pretty, old antique beds, and Deer Isle granite, of course. The inn also has three two-bedroom cottages with kitchenettes and private decks. Open mid-May through mid-October. The inn’s dining room, the Whale’s Rib Tavern, is a favorite.

2. Island Country Club

City: Deer Isle, ME
Category: Golf
Telephone: (207) 348-2379
Address: 442 Sunset Rd.

Description: There’s a lot to like at this nine-hole course. The greens were well laid out when the place was built in 1928, the clubhouse has recently been expanded, and it has a pleasant, welcoming air. You might be tempted to show up at 6:30 a.m. and play until dark after a few rounds here. The club is open from late May through mid-October. The facilities include cart and club rental, a practice green, a snack bar, and tennis courts.

3. Deer Isle Artists Association

City: Deer Isle, ME
Category: Shopping
Telephone: (207) 348-2330
Address: 13 Dow Rd.

Description: Deer Isle has become synonymous with crafts, thanks to the fact that the well-respected Haystack Mountain School of Crafts is located here. It seems everyone who attends the school decides to move to the island. That’s an exaggeration, yes, but consider that there are 150 area artists represented at this co-op gallery where you can find fine art-quality ceramics, textiles, and more. Exhibits change every two weeks.
