1. Great Cove Golf Course

City: Jonesboro, ME
Category: Golf
Telephone: (207) 434-7200
Address: Roque Bluffs Rd.

Description: Ample ocean views make playing this nine-hole course a real treat. These holes were built in the 1970s, and they tend to be on the easier side of things. The amenities are not abundant—snack bar, driving range, practice green, and club and cart rental—but the setting here is the key and more than makes up for it. Tee times are not necessary, and you can play until dark on the one greens fee. Open from May through September.

2. Barren View Golf Course

City: Jonesboro, ME
Category: Golf
Telephone: (207) 434-6531
Address: 1354 Route 1

Description: The views are anything but barren here. This nine-hole course opened in 2003 and it has panoramas aplenty; it’s just that you’re looking at, well, barrens—the blueberry barrens that the Down East coast is famous for. Par is 34, and you may find it easier than some to make. There are the usual amenities—clubhouse with cafe, pro shop, and rentals—and you can start playing as early as 7 a.m. Play all day for $35, or just the nine holes for $15.

3. The White House

City: Jonesboro, ME
Category: Restaurants
Telephone: (207) 434-2792
Address: Route 1

Description: Like Moody’s Diner down the coast, this Down East restaurant has achieved legendary status (though mostly to residents of Washington County). And again, like Moody’s, a lot of the esteem in which people hold the place is due to the pies it serves. People swear by them. The parking lot here is filled most of the time with diners interested in the pies, the seafood platters, the fish chowder, and the breakfast, which begins at 5 a.m. Try the homemade molasses doughnut, the corned beef hash, or the waffles. Just about everyone has a different favorite, from the eggs to the pancakes, so it must be good. Sit down at the counter or one of the tables, and you can say you’ve had breakfast, lunch, or dinner at the White House.
