Address: 70 Luther St.

Description: Tom Bergh is the kind of guy you want to go to sea with. He’s been a guide for most of his life (mountaineering, backcountry skiing, river running, and hiking), and since 1986 he’s been ensconced on Casco Bay’s Peaks Island, where he runs Maine Island Kayak Company, aka MIKCO, among the biggest and best outfitters in the state. His slate at MIKCO is amazingly full: Bergh and his guides offer all manner of sea kayak trips, from half-day introductory paddles to full-on expeditions to points east. Amazing stuff. MIKCO also has its own Ocean School, where you can learn all things kayak.

2. The Fifth Maine Regiment Community Center

City: Peaks Island, ME
Category: Tours & Attractions
Telephone: (207) 766-3330

Description: You don’t have to be a Civil War buff to enjoy a visit to this old hall, but it certainly helps. Built in 1888 as a meeting place for veterans of the Fifth Maine, the small museum brims with memorabilia from the Civil War. Exhibits rotate in and out, there’s a gift shop, and programs are hosted during the summer months. Many people get married here, too. Open from noon to 4 p.m. from July through September and on a limited basis in the off-season.
