Description: The East Machias River has long been a favorite canoeing and fishing spot among Down East outdoorsfolk, and some years back, the state obligingly purchased 11,000 acres around the river and its neighboring lakes, ponds, and streams. It’s another public reserve prize, a big wildland full of prime canoeing, camping, fishing, and exploring opportunities. You’ll hardly guess that you’re just 10 miles from Route 1 and downtown Machias—it feels a world away. Facilities are limited to a handful of boat launches and some primitive campsites.
